Pregnancy and Parenting Education Program

The Birth & Women's Health Center cares about you and your family.   We want to help you plan and prepare for one of life's most wondrous and memorable events.   Birthing and parenting may seem overwhelming at times but we are here to help ease the transition.   Educating yourself and your family about this unique year will give you skills and confidence.   Husbands, partners, or support persons are welcome (one per patient).

We believe childbirth education is a vital component of prenatal care. In particular, preparation for the first few days and weeks AFTER the birth is so important that we consider it an eligibility factor for first time parents.

You can choose childbirth education offerings from other sources besides those we offer here at the birth center:

Childbirth Choices: In this 2 hour forum one of our staff presents the Birth Center philosophy and the Midwifery model of care; pregnancy and birth options that are available today are also discussed. Included is a tour of our Birth Center. Session is one evening only.

Centering: Group Prenatal Care replaces one-on-one prenatal visits with regular gathering of couples due within the same month. Group prenatal care participants receive education and group support along with their prenatal care. The group will take tours of the Birth Center and TMC Labor and Delivery. This series meets our childbirth education eligibility requirements.

Childbirth Education Series: This is a 10 hour course offered over 4 weeks. We cover what to expect in pregnancy and labor, labor management, interventions in childbirth, and newborn and postpartum care, including breastfeeding. Partners are encouraged to attend.

Breastfeeding Basics - Explore why babies do what they do to gain better understanding of newborn behavior. Also learn more about tips, techniques and myths of breastfeeding. The class is one 2 hour session and happens on the 4th Tuesday of the month from 4-6pm. Call the Birth Center to Register.

Childbirth Refresher Class: This is a one time class for those who have already had a baby or those taking childbirth classes outside our Birth Center. We will focus on the end of pregnancy, discuss birthing options, develop pain management techniques, and plan possible changes for a more satisfying birth experience. This class focuses on short stay and homecoming information for those delivering at the Birth Center.

Community Options: There is a list of community offerings in our resource binder and in the childbirth class registration book. You can also easily find options online. We recommend you attend our Childbirth Refresher Class in addition to any outside course.

Registration is required for all classes (unless noted). Classes fill up quickly, so please register early.
