Laura, Fabian, Cecilia and Lavina
I was one week overdue when Cecilia finally decided to come out and see us. I had been in erratic labor for about twelve hours when the contractions started to come three minutes apart and we headed for the Birth Center. I had struggled with a bulging disc in my low back for many years prior to getting pregnant, and it was my primary health concern throughout pregnancy. Despite this, I really wanted a Birth Center experience and water birth for myself, my husband Fabian, and my baby. My friend Lavina, a massage therapist and excellent nurturer, was also part of our birth team. By the time I got to the Birth Center, my right leg was already completely numb, indicating that the disc was severely compromised. Lisa, our midwife, broke my water and we got into the tub. Due to severe back pain, it was apparent within a few hours that natural childbirth was not an option and I was transferred to TMC in an ambulance. Although we attempted vaginal birth with an epidural, the baby's position and my compromised back forced us into a c-section. Despite the difficulties, Cecilia Rose Alexander-Alfie was born at 3:15 AM on February 18, 2003 at 8 lbs., 10 oz! She was healthy, alert, and eager to nurse right from the beginning. Before CeeCee's birth, I thought I had to have a Birth Center experience. After the birth, I realized that what was most important was my midwife, Lisa. It was our relationship of trust - and the incredible support of Fabian and Lavina on my birth team - that allowed me to make it through a very scary and painful experience. I knew that I could trust her assessment of my need for hospital care and a c-section. I am so grateful to the Birth Center and to Lisa, for helping bring Cecilia into the world safely!
