Lorena Di Bello and her baby, Angela Consuelo Torrez.
I first came to the Birth Center in February of 2002, at six weeks of pregnancy. I went to my first check up appointment together with my fiance, Wilbert. We were expecting our first baby, and were overwhelmed with questions. We were both delighted to find that Sarah, one of the midwives, was willing to ease our fears by answering all our questions. We knew right there and then, that this was the place for us to get care.
During the fifth month of pregnancy, I suffered the terrible loss of Wilbert in an accident at work. I did not only lose my partner and love, but I found myself having to deal with the pregnancy all on my own. I came from Argentina 10 years ago, and had no family here to help me through the last trimester of pregnancy. But, I was not totally alone. The whole staff at the Birth Center knew of my situation and provided the necessary support. They gave me the special attention and love I very much needed. They understood that my unborn child had become the most precious gift that Wilbert left me and his family. They saw me at the office any time I wanted to hear my baby's heart; they authorized the testing and monitoring needed to make sure the pregnancy was progressing fine; they answered all my phone calls, no matter how late it was; and they gave me a referral to the best labor support doula, Maria Sara Villa. I could not have asked for more personalized care.
My baby was born October 1, 2002 at 3:44 pm. The baby never cried like most newborns do, and took her a while to get some color. After Karen and Olivia made sure she was alright, I cut the umbilical cord on behalf of her father who wanted her so much. After all that work and pain, and some tears of joy and some of sadness for not being able to share physically this moment with the dad; there she was, my beautiful daughter, Angela Consuelo Torrez, 5lb. 12 oz and 17 inches. I feel that thanks to the support, expertise and love that I received, and continue receiving, from the staff at the Birth Center, I was able to overcome tragedy and stay hopeful throughout the pregnancy. Angela and I would be forever grateful. |
